Bluegleam is a very rare material that can be found in the Horizon Zero Dawn expansion, The Frozen Wilds. Bluegleam is an incredibly useful item despite its rarity, as it allows Aloy to access weapon and gear upgrades that would otherwise be out of her reach. With the importance of Bluegleam to Horizon Zero Dawn, we here at TheGamer are going to help players out with 10 things you should know about Bluegleam.

10 It Can Only Be Found In The Cut

Bluegleam is a material that was introduced with The Frozen Wilds expansion, and it can only be acquired in the area introduced with said expansion, the Cut. The Cut is an extension to the Banuk territory that heads further north on the map into a tundra-like environment.

While some expansions sprinkle their additional items and materials across the game world to make it feel like those materials were always there, Horizon Zero Dawn doesn't. That said, there is a reason for this.

9 Created By Dead Machines

The reason for that is that the Cut is the only place on the map cold enough to create Bluegleam. Bluegleam holds a religious significance to the Banuk people, as they believe it to be the physical manifestation of the Blue Light within the machines that roam the world of Horizon Zero Dawn.

However, the reality is that Bluegleam is just frozen machine fluid. While there are other snowy and cold areas in the apocalyptic Horizon Zero Dawn world, only the Cut reaches the lower temperatures required to create Bluegleam.

8 There Are 100 Units Of Bluegleam Available In A Playthrough

Aloy can only acquire a total of 100 pieces of Bluegleam in a single playthrough of Horizon Zero Dawn.

This is a give-and-take for the player, as it means that they won't have to rely on the random number generator to obtain Bluegleam. This material will definitely spawn at specific locations throughout the Cut, but it's also a set amount of Bluegleam. That said, the total amount of items that can be purchased with Bluegleam amounts to 100 regardless, so Aloy won't find more items than she can purchase with the total amount of Bluegleam on the map.

7 Doesn't Carry Over Into New Game+

If the player gets tired of searching for Bluegleam on this playthrough and thinks that they can just save the amount they have and try again with New Game+, stop. This isn't a good way to get more Bluegleam, as Aloy will lose all of it in New Game+.

The reason for this is that Bluegleam qualifies as a Special Item, and theseare removed from Aloy's inventory before the New Game+ playthrough begins. That said, if you get tired of looking for Bluegleam, there is some good news.

6 Aloy Can Buy A Bluegleam Map

Aloy can purchase a map that shows the location of all Bluegleam available in the Cut. It can be found in a Banuk settlement in the Cut, and it gives Aloy a general idea of where Bluegleam deposits can be found.

In order to purchase this item, Aloy needs to have 250 shards, badger bone, and goatskin. Otherwise, Aloy cannot afford the map, and the merchant won't sell it to her.

5 Aloy Can Also Purchase Some Bluegleam

Bluegleam isn't only found in the wilds of the Cut; some Bluegleam can be purchased from Banuk merchants located throughout the Cut. However, Bluegleam is sacred to the Banuk, so these merchants won't come off their Bluegleam cheaply.

There are a total of four Bluegleam boxes that can be purchased on a single playthrough, and they require lenses from some of the most dangerous machines found throughout the world. To get all four boxes you will need a Thunderjaw Lens, a Stormbird Lens, a Behemoth Lens, and a Rockbreaker Lens.

4 Gets Aloy Unique Treasure Boxes

Finally, this is the reason why Bluegleam is so special and why Aloy will want to find all 100 pieces in the Cut. It can score some nice mystery boxes that will provide Aloy with useful crafting materials.

These Banuk Mystery Boxes cost a total of 10 Bluegleam for all five and net Aloy hundreds of Shards and wire pieces, a Spear Damage Coil, Luminous and Crystal Braiding, some animal skin, and a single lone sock.

3 Gets Aloy Master Outfits

There is a Master Banuk Ice Hunter outfit, Master Carja Blazon outfit, and a Master Nora Silent Hunter outfit. Each one provides freeze resist, burn resist, and stealth respectively, and each one also just looks really cool.

2 Gets Aloy The Best Bows In The Game

If Aloy is looking to get some of the best bows in the game, she needs to look no further than the Banuk Bluegleam merchants in the cut. The Banuk Champion, Powershot, and Striker Bows can be purchased for a total of 42 Bluegleam and are only outmatched by the Nora Longshot Bow, which was only available through a preorder code.

The Banuk Champion Bow is the best War Bow, the Powershot Bow is the best Sharpshot Bow, and the Striker Bow is the best Hunter Bow. Each one also has an Adept variation available in New Game+.

1 Bluegleam Cost Remains The Same In Ultra Hard

Horizon Zero Dawn: Everything You Need To Know About Bluegleam (10)

One last detail worth knowing about Bluegleam is that the cost for the gear mentioned above remains the same in Ultra Hard difficulty.

Usually, the material cost for equipment in Ultra Hard is doubled, but, due to the finite amount of Bluegleam on the map, the required quantity to purchase the master outfits and Banuk Bows is the same across all difficulties.
